The Hereford Map – layering geography, history and theology
Today we watched part of a wonderful documentary titled “The Beauty of Maps”, which was forwarded to us from a friend (thanks Bron!) from the wonderful Brain Pickings blog.
Anyway, the main focus of this episode was the Hereford Mappa Mundi which is currently on display in Hereford Cathedral in Hereford, England and is the largest medieval map known to still exist.
This intriguing map layers geography with human history and theology to create a complex story of place and belief of the known and unknown world.
British artist Grayson Perry created his own version of the map, using personal experience and identity as the starting point.
