The theme of ‘cultural strangers’ focuses on our impending journey to Turkey in Sept-October 2011.
We are fascinated by the history and culture of Turkey as well as the natural landscape. Many events recorded in our history are located here and the multiple layers of narrative figure as maps: social and geographical. These themes will be the focus of an artist-in-residence project at the Babayan Culture House is situated in the small historical village of Ibrahimpasa (the Armenian name is Babayan) in Cappadocia, Central Anatolia in Turkey.
After arriving in Istanbul we are going on a tour, traveling to the following locations:

After the whirlwind tour we will be back in Istanbul for ISEA2011 and the Istanbul Biennial before heading off to Babayan Culture House.
The residency is envisaged as an opportunity to experiment with a range of GIS mapping and GPS tools to create a series of work exploring our experience and understanding of Turkish landscape, history and culture.
In the lead up to the residency, the focus is on gathering research online to provide a starting point for developing connections to places and events. We hope to build layers of knowledge about this amazing place and we look forward ot sharing our journey with you.
